My elderly mother spends her limited savings on tv shopping shows and jewelery?
After spending nearly $300K over the last 4 years on jewelry and assorted items off of the “jewelry channel” and HSN my mom vowed to stop. But, lonely after her Alzheimer’s husband’s death, she is back at spending the last of her small amount of savings she has left.
When I try to talk to her about it, she gets angry and denies it and says she doesn’t spend hardly anything. Then she starts telling me, how she hardly spends anything and hasn’t even bought underwear for two years! Maybe so–but she just bought 9 pair of shoes, 5 purses, 2 air purifiers, 1 more vacuum (has 3 new, unused ones) and the list goes on and on.
I don’t blame you for worrying about your mom’s shopping behavior, $300K is a huge amount of money to spend shopping via the television. Your mom’s denials are understandable as well; she may be embarrassed, or she may feel like you are trying to ‘parent’ her or tell her what to do, or she may be fearful because she can not stop.
You have many choices. You could do as some have suggested here, and just let her be. Eventually she will not have the funds to continue. This wouldn’t be my choice, though. It is very possible that your mom is either depressed and using the shopping to make herself feel better or she has an illness that is preventing her from thinking in a reasonable manner. You could try to get your mom to visit her doctor; she really should have a complete physical. See if she’ll allow you to go with her to the doctor, if not call ahead and relay your concerns.
Other things you could try in addition to getting her to the doctor might be to spend more time with her. Take her places. Call her every day. See if you can get her interested in doing volunteer work or joining a club or group.
Contact your local Area Agency on Aging. There may be caseworkers or groups that can give you advice, direct you to resources in your community, and give you ideas for activities and volunteer work for seniors in your community.
I know that this is a tough situation. You want to respect your mom, but it can be easy to become frustrated. The more you can convince your mom try other things, and encourage her to do things for herself, the better chances will be that she can stop the ‘self medicating’ by shopping.

So in the past month, my mom has spent well over 1000 dollars on herself, rather than booking appointments for the dentist, or paying for health or dental insurance and instead lying to the school she works for, saying she gets it somewhere else [when my brothers and I have obvious dental complications. Very. Obvious. For a couple of years now]. She also clips coupons almost daily, buys things she doesn’t even need if and only if they’re on sale, and freaks out if she has to pay five dollars for homework club, the place my little brother goes if she picks him up from scrabble club late – so I have to walk to school to pick him up, which I don’t mind at all, but the fact of the matter is it’s five dollars. She’ll freak out if she has to pay for absolutely anything. But she’ll spend 115 dollars on a fountain she doesn’t need, 100 on a new rebounder, and several hundred on clothing and shoes and new jewelery. So I blocked QVC, HSN and NBC. Or SNBC, I think.
She’ll realize within an hour or two that they’re blocked, and she needs a pin if she wants to watch them. She can go online, sure, but everyday she plops down in front of the couch and buys things off the television, and rarely goes on her computer, which she barely knows how to use. So yes. What’s your opinion?
I can see how your mother’s behavior can be annoying at times. She is smart to use coupons and take advantage of deals but it sounds like she needs to balance her spending on her family and other essentials also. Hopefully your relationship with her will not be affected negatively by your channel blocking.

It was a regular Sunday morning for Gretchen Fields: wake up, turn on the T.V, grab a bowl of cheerios, and slump around in her pj’s the rest of the morning. In the middle of Tom and Jerry’s adventurous feud, she heard a knock at the door. That was unusual. No one had come to visit Gretchen and her dad since the split. Well, except her grandmother Gracey, that old witch was always trying to plan her future. She hopped up and threw her bowl in the sink. She was hesitant on opening the door. She peeked through the peek hole. There was a man; a tall man in a black suit and blue tie. Very formal I guess if it weren’t for that cheesy haircut and 1980’s dress shoes. Maybe he had the wrong apartment number. She would’ve screamed through the door that he had the wrong apartment number to avoid the awkwardness of telling him face-to-face. But she didn’t want to wake up her dad. Ever since the divorce, he had been too drunk to ever care of his surroundings. Eventually, she opened the door. Apparently, the man was a lawyer. He started saying business-y lawyer crap she didn’t understand. Finally, after all the jabber and confidential contract crud, he asked for a parent or guardian. Nervousness swept over her body. She hoped her dad wasn’t still drunk from last night’s club hopping. She grabbed her music box her mom had given her before she left, from the coffee table. Inside was a pair of golden keys to her dad’s bedroom. She snatched up the keys and headed for the hallway. She twisted the keys in the knob and yanked the door open. Her dad was lying in bed (as usual). He had the tele turned on HSN, the shopping channel. Not normal but she could deal. She threw the keys at the headboard expecting the all so familiar drunken groan, but instead a slight movement and then a cheerful “good morning darling!” followed by a bright smile. Was that the same depressed father she had known all her life? The Patrick Fields that was lazy and always had to have a glass of beer in his hand? At that moment, she had forgotten the reason she had come into her father’s room in the first place. So she walked back in the cozy living room and saw the cold, hard-faced man on the couch enjoying a snickers bar. She hadn’t remembered letting him in though. She couldn’t move. Like her feet were glued to the floor. Dazed or daydreaming. Daydreaming. That’s when she woke up. She must have been in that red minivan for hours, or at least that’s what it felt like. It was another flashback. A painful flashback of what was. Of what used to be. Why had they taken her away? Her dad was fine. He was not an alcoholic. He was just stressed and liked to have his occasional beers or vodka; and sometimes even both. She still remembered the harsh words the tall lawyer had spoken: “unstable, demanding, useless, and uncaring.” I guess it was destined to be, especially with a drug dealing mom and “alcoholic” dad. The driver lady at the front asked Gretchen if she needed a potty break. The lady up front had fiery red hair and gigantic boobs. Not usually the type of girl you would see driving a minivan. Gretchen took advantage of the offer and said yes. Maybe if she got some fresh air and a red bull, she could get her thoughts straight. They stopped at a nearby gas station. It had the stench of popcorn, smoke, and gas. It reminded her of the streets of New York. How she missed the familiar lights and busy cars. She missed the stray cats and business men and women rushing to their jobs in cabs or subways. “Just forget” Gretchen kept telling herself. But it was too hard. She was a city girl, not a country girl from an Alabama foster home. She had never met her foster parents, but she heard them over the phone once. They seemed so fake. Like those perfect little families you would see on T.V. Like the Brady Bunch or Cosby Show. Her dad said they were probably just nervous. Gretchen thinks that they’re boring. One of those families that spend their Saturday nights watching reruns on T.V land. She jogged into the small stop-n-shop. She grabbed a sugar-free red bull and a pack of sour gummy worms. The snacks read $7.75. She pulled a 50 dollar bill out of her pocket and now she had a jumble of ones left over. They wouldn’t all fit in her pocket so she stuffed the leftovers in her bra when she didn’t think anyone was looking. But there was another teen around her age. He was probably 15 or so. He gave her a weird look and all she could do was blush and smile. Stupid cashier, the store had to have 10s or at least 5s. She rushed back to the van still red from embarrassment. They took off from the gas station and were back on the road. CAUTION, DEER CROSSING, LOW TREES, YEILD, DEAD END. Those were the signs Gretchen was now seeing. “Must be getting close” she thought as ugly 3 flats started to appear out of the window. Gretchen was about to doze off until her phone started vibrating in her pocket. There was a new text. It was from her BFF, Jessica. Ever since last Saturday

The scarf could be used year-round, but as soon as I saw that throw, I envisioned snuggling up on the couch on a cold/rainy day, watching tv or reading a book.
If your father’s wife is that kind of gal, then the throw would be a perfect addition to their home.

Plus Sized women and belts?
Well, I had a baby not too long ago and now my body is a lot larger than it used to be. I’m having a difficult time dressing this new body of mine. One thing I was told was to always emphasize your waist because it will give you a shape and help you look thinner. Well, some of the blouses I have do not emphasize my waist at all. They are actually pretty shapeless. So, I thought maybe if I put a cute belt over the shirt it would help give it some style. So here’s the question:
Should I wear a wider belt or a thin belt? I actually like the wider belts better but I’m afraid they won’t be comfortable. My tummy is still rather large (I look like I’m 6 months pregnant – still!) and I don’t want to wear a belt like this if it hurts to sit down!
Have any other plus sized women with larger tummies worn belts like this? What did you think? Did you like it? Comfortable or uncomfortable?

I want to wear the belt higher on my waist and my body type right now is I guess the “apple” shape. I have a large bust, large tummy, my hips are smaller than my tummy, and I have leaner legs and arms. I want to disguise my large tummy but at the same time make it look smaller and more proportionate.

I think that belt will be great, it looks soft and you could loosen it and it wouldnt look baggy or sloppy! Thicker belts look better because a thin belt will just look unproportioned and will in turn make you look un proportioned. Im chuby aswell and I dont find belts uncomfortable. And if you dont want to wear a belt look into getting empire waste tops (that sinch under the bust than flow away from the tummy) and a v neck actually de-emphisizes your chest (which I’ve always thought it would do the opposite lol)

to be honest, anything.
What you should be looking/focusing on are…
a) event – are you going to wear this at a formal event? if so, youd want to go for pumps.
b) casual – your looking at flats or wedges.
Also, you need to match the shoe to the style and texture of the dress. If the wrap dress has lots of pattern in it, go for something suttle and try to match the color with the shoe. If your wrap dress is not really out there you can do a shoe that sticks out in a crowd OR a suttle school with a purse that sticks out and brings the outfit together.
Shop for a shoe that you can also wear with other dresses or outfits.
Another tip, you can also add a neck scarf around your neck, french style. It would bump you up in the “classic/class” sector and give it something else/something different.

Yeah! Those are so nice, wear them with a nice dress, or skirt, or even trousers… you can pair those with a lot. Just try them on with different things, if you like them with what you find, wear it! I’m sure they’ll look good with most tops and bottoms

If you don’t have a white blouse, anything with puffy sleeves will work. Or a sweater set (maybe your mom has one, they got popular again in the eighties), or something off-the shoulder. Or a t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up. The last one is more of a boy look, but we do the best we can with what we have.

To be honest with you…the dress is great and so are the shoes. They are married…emphasis on the married word. Welcome to the 21st century…people kiss on New year’s…it is tradition. In this day and age so many people are getting divorces and fighting..you should embrace the fact that your son and his wife are happy and proud to show it. have you tried Barefoot Science shoe inserts to support the arch of your foot?
I have to stand for long periods of time at work and by the end of the day, even in the middle of the day, my feet start to hurt. I know I need some sort of support under the arch of my foot. I bought those Dr. Scholls Gellin things but they didn’t make any difference at all. I saw Barefoot Science on HSN and wondered if anyone who’s actually tried them has an opinion. Would they support my feet while standing for hours at a time? Would they be good for walking outdoors or on a treadmill? Do you think they are worth $60? What about the company, if I wanted to return them, would they give me trouble? I want to do my research before spending that much money on something that may not work as well as they say. I suppose I should just get a good pair of sneakers, but I don’t really like the look of most sneakers, I go more towards Vans and shoes like that, so an insert would work with whatever shoes I’m wearing.
